The United Arab Emirates has expressed its concern regarding the developments in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, urging all parties to de-escalate tensions and cease hostilities, advocating for dialogue and peaceful methods to resolve disputes.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the importance of protecting civilians, government facilities, and property, while calling for maximum restraint to overcome the current crisis.
The ministry reiterated the UAE’s stance on finding a resolution to the conflict in Libya, fully supporting measures that ensure the security, stability, and unity of Libya, in line with the outcomes of the roadmap, Security Council resolutions, and the ceasefire agreement, all aimed at fulfilling the aspirations of the Libyan people for development and stability.
Residents of Tripoli reported that the worst fighting the city has seen in years subsided yesterday, shortly after the Tripoli Government announced a ceasefire, although no official report was released concerning casualties.
The Ministry of Defense of the Tripoli Government stated that regular forces have begun coordinating with relevant security agencies to implement necessary measures for ensuring calm, including the deployment of neutral units.
According to the ministry’s statement, its forces have initiated actions to maintain tranquility, noting that these actions include deploying neutral units at various contact points.
Ceasefire Declaration
Meanwhile, the Libyan Presidential Council confirmed an immediate and unconditional halt to all armed clashes in Tripoli, stressing complete abstention from the use of force in civilian areas.
The council held accountable anyone who violates this directive or contributes to instability within the capital, urging all parties to act rationally, engage in dialogue, and prioritize national interests over any other considerations, while reaffirming efforts to unify the military and security institutions to establish a state governed by law and order.
Calls for Calm
Additionally, Egypt has called on all Libyan parties to prioritize national interests, halt the ongoing escalation, and adhere to reason to safeguard the resources of the Libyan state.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Egypt expressed its profound concern over the unfolding events in Libya and the military clashes occurring in Tripoli, along with the potential risks of further escalation that threaten the resources and lives of the Libyan people.
Egypt has urged its nationals in Libya to exercise utmost caution and remain indoors until the situation stabilizes and peace returns.
UN Condemnation
In this context, the United Nations Support Mission in Libya condemned the recent surge in violence in Tripoli and the mobilization of forces in other areas of the country. The mission warned that the situation could quickly spiral out of control.
Expressing grave concern over reports of civilian casualties, the mission reiterated its call for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire across all regions, to allow for the safe evacuation of civilians trapped in heavily contested areas.
The mission urged all parties to ensure civilian protection and engage immediately in serious and good-faith dialogue to resolve disputes peacefully, highlighting that harming civilians, jeopardizing their safety, and targeting civilian infrastructure may constitute crimes under international law, and those responsible will be held accountable.
The mission confirmed it is in continuous communication with relevant parties on the ground and partners to strive for de-escalation and supports all ongoing mediation efforts, reaffirming its readiness to facilitate dialogue and bring an end to the fighting before the situation worsens.
