Vishal Bhardwaj Explains His Decision on Hussain Ustara’s Family Approval

Shahid Kapoor’s upcoming film, O’Romeo, has been creating significant interest on social media due to its compelling storyline. Recently, the film attracted attention when Sanober Shaikh, the daughter of Hussain Ustara, raised concerns regarding its content and demanded compensation for usage of her father’s likeness.

At the trailer launch of O’Romeo, director Vishal Bhardwaj addressed the legal claims made by Sanober Shaikh. She previously suggested that Kapoor’s character closely resembles her late father and that the filmmakers had not sought permission. Bhardwaj clarified that the film is based on the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, authored by Hussain Zaidi. He noted that he acquired the rights to adapt the story for the film.

Bhardwaj emphasized that since the narrative originates from a published work, he believed it unnecessary to obtain familial approval. He mentioned that any permissions regarding the story’s characters would likely have been the obligation of the author. According to Bhardwaj, the adaptation includes a substantial amount of fictional elements alongside real-life inspirations.

Sanober Shaikh’s legal notice claims that the portrayal of Shahid Kapoor’s character infringes on her family’s rights, thereby warranting compensation. She expressed her frustration with the filmmakers for ignoring their requests and stated that legal recourse was seen as a necessary step. Shaikh asserted that if aspects related to her father’s life are depicted, the filmmakers should have consulted with the family.

O’Romeo features Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri in leading roles, with Kapoor playing the character inspired by Hussain Ustara and Dimri portraying Sapna Didi. The film also boasts an ensemble cast that includes Nana Patekar, Vikrant Massey, Disha Patani, Avinash Tiwary, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Farida Jalal. The trailer was released on January 21, 2026, with the film set to premiere in theaters on February 13, 2026.

As the legal situation evolves, the discourse around the film’s themes and inspirations is expected to continue. What are your thoughts on this controversy involving legal claims and creative expression? Let us know your perspective.
