AI Reimagines Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham with Meryl Streep and Tom Cruise

Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has recently expressed his excitement over an AI-generated video that reimagines Hollywood actors in iconic roles from his classic film, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham. The video, which has gained considerable traction on social media, features a lineup of well-known international stars stepping into roles originally filled by Bollywood legends.

In the AI casting, Meryl Streep takes on the character of Nandini Raichand, a role made famous by Jaya Bachchan. Karan Johar, clearly delighted by this reinterpretation, indicated that he would welcome the opportunity to cast Streep in one of his future projects, as he believes the “virtual” landscape is opening up new possibilities for filmmakers like him.

Sharing the video on his Instagram Stories, Johar remarked, “Ok AI! Whatever it takes to get Meryl Streep into any frame of mine!!! I will take it gladly! Virtual is manifesting for me.” His enthusiasm underscores the growing intersection of technology and creativity within the film industry.

The video imagines other Hollywood stars in popular roles from the film as well, including George Clooney as Yashvardhan Raichand (originally portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan), Tom Cruise as Rahul Raichand (played by Shah Rukh Khan), Anne Hathaway as Anjali Sharma (Kajol’s character), and Jennifer Lawrence as Naina Kapoor (Rani Mukerji). Additionally, Margot Robbie takes on the role of Pooja (Kareena Kapoor Khan), while Chris Hemsworth is cast as Rohan Raichand (Hrithik Roshan).

Released in 2001, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham tells the story of a wealthy family facing turmoil when the patriarch disowns his adopted son for marrying outside their social class. The film portrays years of separation followed by a poignant reconciliation. Notably, it was the most expensive Indian production at the time and it has since become one of the highest-grossing Indian films of all time. The enduring popularity of the film has transformed its characters into lasting icons within pop culture, showcasing its significance in Indian cinema.
