Awez Shares Insights on Dad Ismail Darbar and His Dynamic with Bhansali

Filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali and music composer Ismail Darbar have a long history of collaboration, notably in iconic films like Devdas and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. Despite their past successes, their professional relationship has faced significant strains over the years. In a recent discussion, Awez Darbar, Ismail’s son and a prominent figure from Bigg Boss, shed light on this turbulent dynamic.

Awez characterized their relationship as akin to “Tom and Jerry,” emphasizing the frequent ups and downs they experience. He noted that both artists often reconcile after disputes, only to find themselves at odds again over minor issues. “For us, it becomes a big thing, ‘Oh God, you have left a film?’ It’s a cycle that I’ve observed multiple times,” he explained. While he perceives their disagreements as trivial, he acknowledges a deep-seated respect that exists between them.

When questioned about whether ego clashes led to Ismail’s departure from the project Heeramandi, Awez suggested it wasn’t just limited to that film. “It happens with all their films… They always seem to return and collaborate again, but then something ignites the conflict anew,” he shared, indicating that he hasn’t directly witnessed these episodes but is aware of their pattern.

In a recent interview, Ismail Darbar expressed his frustrations with Bhansali, labeling him as egoistic and stating that he would refuse to work with him again, no matter the financial offer. Ismail asserted that his contributions had been pivotal to the success of their collaborative projects, claiming, “I was the backbone in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas too.” He reported that the recognition he feels he deserves has often been overshadowed, leading to his reluctance to re-engage professionally with Bhansali.

Ismail Darbar has received acclaim for his work, winning the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam in 2000. His contributions extend to a variety of films, including Shakti: The Power, Kisna: The Warrior Poet, and Mehbooba, showcasing his versatility and talent in the industry.

On the other hand, Sanjay Leela Bhansali is actively pursuing new projects, with his upcoming film Love & War featuring leading actors Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor, and Vicky Kaushal. This highly anticipated film is set to make its theatrical debut in 2026, marking another chapter in Bhansali’s celebrated career.
