Tamil filmmaker Bharathiraja has been hospitalized in Chennai following complaints of breathlessness. The 84-year-old veteran was admitted to MGM Healthcare in Chennai, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
A recent medical bulletin confirmed that Bharathiraja’s condition is now stable. The hospital’s statement clarified that he was admitted due to a severe lung infection and is receiving comprehensive care in the Critical Care Unit. Medical experts are closely monitoring his progress, and he is responding well to treatment.
Earlier updates provided more details about his condition. On January 3, it was reported that Bharathiraja was in the intensive care unit, where he was receiving diligent care. His vital signs were reported to be stable, and with the necessary support, his clinical condition improved.
Bharathiraja is a prominent figure in the Tamil film industry, known for his impactful works. He faced a personal tragedy in 2025 with the loss of his son Manoj, who died at the age of 48 from a cardiac arrest. Throughout his career, Bharathiraja directed several acclaimed films, such as “Taj Mahal,” “Samudhiram,” and “Alli Arjuna.”
His filmmaking journey began in 1977 with the release of “16 Vayathinile,” which marked the start of a prolific career. Over the years, he delivered notable films including “Kizhake Pogum Rail,” “Sigappu Rojakkal,” “Alaigal Oivathillai,” “Kaadhal Oviyam,” and “Mudhal Mariyathai.” In recognition of his contributions to cinema, he was awarded the Padma Shri in 2004.
