Gouri Kishan, a rising star in Tamil cinema, recently made headlines for her strong stance against sexist questioning during a press conference. The incident occurred ahead of the release of her film “Others,” where she confronted a male journalist about inappropriate inquiries regarding her weight. This exchange has since prompted a wave of support from fellow actresses Chinmayi Sripaada, Khushbu Sundar, and Richa Chadha, who expressed their concerns about the treatment of women in the industry.
Chinmayi praised Gouri’s assertiveness in addressing the disrespectful question. She shared a clip from the press event, highlighting Gouri’s courage and stating, “No male actor gets asked what his weight is. No idea why they asked a female actor.” Gouri expressed gratitude for Chinmayi’s supportive words, acknowledging the inspiration women like her provide for standing firm in the face of gender bias.
Khushbu Sundar also chimed in, condemning the lack of professionalism in journalism that leads to such invasive questions. She emphasized that asking about a woman’s weight is irrelevant to her professional capabilities and challenged the notion that male actors would be subjected to similar inquiries. Sundar concluded by highlighting the importance of mutual respect in conversations, stating that respect should not be one-sided.
Richa Chadha echoed these sentiments, underlining the additional challenges women face in the entertainment industry. She remarked on the myriad hurdles women encounter while striving for success, particularly when they have to deal with judgment based on superficial attributes rather than their talent and hard work.
Addressing the journalist directly, Gouri argued that her weight has no bearing on her abilities as an actress. “How does my weight concern you in any way? How does it matter and be relevant to the film?” she questioned. Gouri made it clear that her focus lies on her career and the roles she chooses, emphasizing her commitment to portraying strong, career-oriented characters.
Gouri Kishan, who garnered attention for her debut as a younger version of Trisha’s character in “96” (2018), has continued to build her filmography with notable roles in “Karnan” (2021), “Ulagammai” (2023), and “Boat” (2024). The recent release of “Others” on November 7 has further established her presence in the Tamil film industry and ignited discussions about the treatment of women in the spotlight.
