Actors Supriya Pathak and Pankaj Kapur, celebrated figures in Bollywood, recently marked 38 years of marriage. Their enduring relationship, however, faced challenges early on, particularly from Supriya’s mother, renowned actress Dina Pathak, who initially disapproved of Pankaj.
In a recent interview with Hauterfly, Supriya appeared alongside her daughter Sanah Kapur, reflecting on the family dynamics and her bond with her mother. They discussed how Dina’s disapproval created tension, especially when she discovered Supriya’s relationship with Pankaj.
Dina Pathak’s opposition was strong, as she openly expressed her doubts about the relationship lasting. Supriya recalled, “My mother didn’t like him. She never thought this relationship would work. Even now, if she were alive, she would still say that he would leave me.” This skepticism lingered despite the couple’s long-lasting union.
Attempts to separate them were not uncommon. Supriya revealed that her mother resorted to spreading false information to undermine Pankaj. Despite never having a drink in his life, Dina attempted to convince Supriya that Pankaj had issues with alcohol, a claim she fabricated through her own investigation. This led to persistent criticisms from Dina, aimed at dissuading her daughter from pursuing the relationship.
Over time, after enduring her mother’s relentless objections, Supriya decided to take a stand. She eventually told Dina that she was getting married on a specific date, giving her mother an ultimatum. “You want to come, come; if you don’t, then don’t,” Supriya recounted, highlighting the tension of that moment. Dina’s response, referencing her culinary preference, signified a reluctant acceptance of Pankaj’s Punjabi background, which was unexpected.
Interestingly, Supriya noted that as time passed and just before Dina’s death, her mother’s perception of Pankaj shifted dramatically. She recognized him as the right partner for Supriya, ultimately expressing her desire for Pankaj to be close to her in her final days.
Today, Supriya and Pankaj share a daughter, Sanah, and a son, Ruhaan. Pankaj also has an older son, actor Shahid Kapoor, from his previous marriage to Neelima Azeem. Their family reflects a blend of experiences and evolving relationships, embodying the complexities of love and acceptance within families.
