Director Sriram Raghavan Reveals Saif Ali Khan’s Uncertainty on ‘Ek Hasina Thi’

Director Sriram Raghavan recently shared insights about the early challenges faced while casting Saif Ali Khan in his directorial debut, “Ek Hasina Thi,” released in 2004. This neo-noir action thriller became a significant film in Raghavan’s career, setting the stage for his reputation as a master of the thriller genre in Bollywood.

Raghavan noted that Khan was initially hesitant about taking on the role, particularly after the success of his previous film, “Dil Chahta Hai.” At the time, Khan had not experienced many successes, which made him apprehensive about his career direction. “Ek Hasina Thi” ultimately became Khan’s 44th film, and despite his doubts, a mutual appreciation for similar films and literature helped build trust between the actor and director.

The inspiration for “Ek Hasina Thi” emerged after Raghavan missed the opportunity to direct “Ab Tak Chhappan.” Having worked on the concept for a while, it was ultimately shelved. Raghavan recalled that after seeing his disappointment, producer Ram Gopal Varma suggested another story. Embracing this new idea, Raghavan committed to crafting the narrative around it, ultimately finding depth in its raw storytelling style.

In discussing his career, Raghavan reflected on the invaluable lessons learned from Varma. He emphasized the importance of avoiding repetition in filmmaking and cherishing the creative process. Varma advised him to enjoy the film he was creating instead of fixating on future projects. This perspective significantly influenced Raghavan’s approach to his craft.

Additionally, Raghavan mentioned an earlier desire to adapt Ira Levin’s novel “A Kiss Before Dying.” Unfortunately, he had to abandon this idea when he discovered that the storyline was being used for the Shah Rukh Khan film “Baazigar.” He fondly recalled his passion for collecting second-hand books, including Levin’s novel, which he described as a “lovely” read.

Raghavan’s latest project, “Ikkis,” is a biographical drama about Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, showcasing the tales of bravery from the war. Despite receiving positive critiques for its peace-oriented themes, the film has struggled to attract significant audiences in theaters.

These reflections from Raghavan highlight the intricate balance of artistic ambition and the unpredictability of the film industry, shedding light on the challenges and decisions that shape a filmmaker’s journey.
