Disney is taking a significant step in the cinema landscape with the launch of its new large-format screen certification, Infinity Vision. As the premiere of the highly anticipated film Avengers: Doomsday approaches in December, this initiative appears to be part of a broader strategy by the studio.
To qualify for the Infinity Vision label, auditoriums must meet specific standards, including a screen width of at least 50 feet, laser projection technology, and a 7.1 surround-sound system from Dolby Laboratories. According to reports, around 5,500 existing screens globally could meet these requirements, far exceeding the number of current IMAX venues.
IMAX has long been recognized as the leading standard in premium large-screen formats, with major film studios often scheduling releases based on the availability of IMAX screens. This competitive move from Disney is likely influenced by ongoing discussions within the industry regarding premium screen certifications. Major theater chains, including AMC, Regal, and Cinemark, have been exploring the establishment of such standards to enhance cinematic experiences.
While Disney has not disclosed the number of theater chains it has partnered with for Infinity Vision, it has been in talks with multiple operators. Importantly, these theater chains will retain the flexibility to market their own large-screen offerings alongside Disney’s new certification.
Though a specific rollout timeline has not yet been confirmed, many analysts speculate that it could occur as soon as September, coinciding with the re-release of Avengers: Endgame, which holds the title of Disney’s highest-grossing film.
The introduction of Infinity Vision was partly prompted by the anticipated clash between Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. With the latter film backed by Warner Bros. already secured for IMAX screenings, Disney faced the challenge of not having exclusive access for its significant release. This situation could result in considerable financial implications for Disney, especially given its historical contribution to IMAX revenue.
Avengers: Doomsday marks a return for the Russo Brothers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, featuring Robert Downey Jr. in a new role as the film’s antagonist, Doctor Doom. Meanwhile, Dune: Part Three will conclude Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s saga, with Timothée Chalamet reprising his lead role. Both films are set to create fierce competition at the box office, making the strategic move to launch Infinity Vision particularly timely for Disney.
