Imtiaz Ali’s upcoming film, “Main Vaapas Aaunga,” delves into the emotional landscape of the Partition of India. Through the lens of personal stories, the filmmaker aims to present a narrative that resonates with contemporary youth while also honoring the historical significance of this pivotal event.
Ali explained that his intention was never to simply recount historical facts but to evoke a unique perspective on the Partition. Collaborating with talents such as Diljit Dosanjh and music maestro A R Rahman, he envisions the story as a reflection of both individual and national identities. The film, set against the backdrop of 1947, presents themes of love and loss while addressing the impact of migration.
The filmmaker highlighted that, even after 78 years, certain profound memories endure, particularly those associated with youth and romance. He expressed that these poignant recollections are often revisited when reflecting on the Partition. Ali’s inspiration draws from the works of literary figures like Saadat Hasan Manto and Ismat Chughtai, whose narratives on Partition have profoundly influenced his storytelling.
Personal anecdotes from survivors of the Partition have also shaped Ali’s creative vision. He recounted a powerful story of an elderly woman on her deathbed, fixated on a childhood doll she was concerned about, symbolizing lost innocence and memories from long ago. Such intimate accounts have infused the film with a rich, human element.
“Main Vaapas Aaunga” features Vedang Raina and Sharvari as a youthful couple, with Naseeruddin Shah portraying Dosanjh’s grandfather, reflecting on his own past. The film includes a musical number titled “Kya Kamaal Hai,” composed by Rahman, showcasing Dosanjh’s dual talents as an actor and singer.
This project marks a notable reunion for Ali and Dosanjh following their collaboration on “Chamkila.” The director initially explored various actors before concluding that Dosanjh was uniquely suited for the role due to his background and artistic sensibilities.
Naseeruddin Shah’s involvement was a significant highlight for Ali. Excited to cast him in the role of a Sikh character, the director noted the actor’s versatility and eagerness to explore this new role. The younger cast members, Raina and Sharvari, bring a vibrant energy, eager to deepen their craft and contribute to the film’s richness.
Produced by Applause Entertainment and Window Seat Films, “Main Vaapas Aaunga” is slated for release on June 12. Ali hopes to present a film that surprises audiences with its originality and emotional depth, aiming to engage theatergoers looking for meaningful cinema. He acknowledged the current revival of cinema attendance, expressing gratitude for the renewed interest in films within the country.
