Janhvi Kapoor Reflects on Sridevi’s Struggles with Marriage Criticism

Actor Janhvi Kapoor recently shared her thoughts on the public scrutiny that her mother, Sridevi, endured during her career. The late superstar was often labeled a “homewrecker,” a term that had a profound emotional effect on Janhvi.

During a recent appearance on Raj Shamani’s podcast, Janhvi opened up about her mother’s passing, expressing the deep pain and trauma she still feels. She remarked, “I try to escape my mind, my inner turmoil… The biggest trauma was losing my mom, especially the way I did, in front of the whole world.” She explained that her mother’s absence has changed her perspective on life, revealing, “I didn’t lose one parent; I lost my father also that day, the version of him that existed when she was around.”

Janhvi also recalled watching an interview of Sridevi where she discussed the challenges she faced after her marriage to Boney Kapoor. Reflecting on her mother’s struggles, she stated, “People were not very kind when she was around… I understand her now. And I am sorry that I didn’t understand her before.” She acknowledged the societal pressure her mother dealt with, noting that Sridevi approached these challenges from a different viewpoint compared to Janhvi’s understanding as a child.

Boney Kapoor was previously married to Mona Shourie Kapoor, with whom he had two children, actor Arjun Kapoor and Anshula Kapoor. His affair with Sridevi attracted considerable media attention, especially due to the timing with his first marriage. Despite early controversies, Boney and Sridevi built a life together, raising their two daughters, Janhvi and Khushi, until her untimely death in 2018.

Sridevi, born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan in 1963, was celebrated for her roles in iconic Hindi films such as “Chandni,” “Lamhe,” and “English Vinglish.” The recipient of the Padma Shri award, she also garnered acclaim in various regional films. Her last film, “Mom,” earned her a posthumous Best Actress National Award. Tragically, she passed away at the age of 54 in Dubai, with an autopsy concluding the cause of death to be accidental drowning.

Janhvi Kapoor made her Bollywood debut in “Dhadak” shortly after her mother’s passing. Most recently, she starred in the romantic comedy “Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari,” alongside actors Varun Dhawan and Sanya Malhotra. The film, released in 2025, performed moderately well at the box office, grossing around ₹100 crore against a production budget of ₹80 crore.

Looking ahead, Janhvi is set to star in the Telugu film “Peddi,” where she will share the screen with Ram Charan, with the release expected later this year.
