Julia Garner Responds to Criticism of Female Silver Surfer in Fantastic Four

Julia Garner, known for her role in “Ozark,” is set to portray the Silver Surfer in the upcoming film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” This marks a significant moment as it introduces the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Garner’s casting, however, has sparked a considerable reaction from fans, primarily due to the decision to hire a female for the iconic role.

At the London premiere of the film, Garner addressed the controversy regarding her casting. Some fans expressed discontent, believing that the role should have been filled by a male actor. In response, she chose not to dwell on the negative comments, emphasizing her commitment to her performance. “I’m just going to still do my job,” she stated, indicating that she’s focused on her portrayal rather than external opinions.

The film features an adaptation of Shalla-Bal, a character derived from the Silver Surfer comics, who is distinct from the original Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd. Garner pointed out this difference, stating that, “Also, it’s Shalla-Bal, so it’s different.” This character first appeared in “The Silver Surfer” #1 in 1968 and serves as a female counterpart to Norrin Radd.

“The Fantastic Four: First Steps” boasts a star-studded cast, with Pedro Pascal taking on the role of Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (the Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm (the Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm (the Thing). Additionally, Ralph Ineson portrays Galactus, with Paul Walter Hauser, Natasha Lyonne, and John Malkovich rounding out the ensemble.

Scheduled for release on July 25, 2025, the film aims to revitalize the beloved superhero team for a new generation. As anticipation builds, fans are curious to see how Garner’s interpretation of the Silver Surfer will resonate within the broader MCU narrative.
