Kerala High Court Reviews The Kerala Story 2 Before Upcoming Release

The upcoming Hindi film The Kerala Story 2 has sparked controversy due to its portrayal of forced religious conversions in the state of Kerala. Recently, the Kerala High Court requested the Centre’s position on whether an advance screening of the film could take place as challenges to its Censor certificate are raised over its alleged negative representation of the state.

Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas, during the hearing, expressed concern over the film’s depiction of communal tensions in Kerala. He emphasized that while Kerala is known for its harmony, the film suggests otherwise, which could incite unrest. The Justice acknowledged the importance of artistic freedom but noted the responsibilities associated with portraying sensitive topics, particularly when they relate to real events in a specific geographic context. He has offered to watch the film at a screening scheduled for the following day.

The court plans to revisit the matter later in the day, indicating the concern surrounding the film’s release and the potential implications on public sentiment.

The Kerala Story 2 delves into issues of religious conversion and coercion, with its narrative unfolding across regions including Kerala, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. The film features actors such as Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia, and Aishwarya Ojha, and is set to debut in theaters on February 27, having received a U/A certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Amidst this controversy, Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has publicly condemned the film, asserting that it misrepresents the state’s essence as a land of religious harmony and sustainable development. Vijayan argued that it is vital to reject any portrayal of Kerala as a center of terrorism and stressed the importance of maintaining the state’s secular values against misleading propaganda.
