The courtroom drama “Haq,” which premiered on November 7, 2025, stars Emraan Hashmi, Yami Gautam, and newcomer Vartika Singh. Directed by Suparn S Varma, the film delves into significant legal and societal themes, drawing attention to the complexities surrounding women’s rights in India.
Vartika Singh is a model and budding actress who gained recognition for representing India at the 68th Miss Universe pageant, where she placed among the Top 20 contestants in 2019. In addition to her modeling career, Vartika founded a non-profit organization known as Pure Humans in 2018 and collaborated with the Uttar Pradesh government on initiatives to raise tuberculosis awareness. She is a graduate with a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Lucknow.
Before her acting debut in “Haq,” Vartika appeared in several music videos, including “Saware” alongside Kunal Khemu in 2017 and “Kishmish” by Ash King and Qaran in 2019. In “Haq,” she plays Saira Jahan, the second wife of Mohd. Abbas Khan, who is portrayed by Emraan Hashmi. Expressing her gratitude for the audience’s reception, Vartika remarked on the emotional impact of her first Bollywood film, emphasized the importance of viewer approval, and recognized it as motivation to improve in her future projects.
“Haq” is grounded in the historic 1985 Supreme Court judgement in the notable case of Mohd. Ahmed Khan vs Shah Bano Begum. The case revolved around women’s rights and maintenance laws in India. Shah Bano, at the age of 62, sought maintenance from her affluent ex-husband, a prominent lawyer, after their divorce. The Court ruled in her favor, entitling her to maintenance under Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. However, this ruling was later undermined by legislation passed by the Rajiv Gandhi government in 1986.
The film also features notable actors such as Danish Husain, Sheeba Chadha, and Aseem Hattangady in prominent roles. Produced by Junglee Pictures, “Haq” is backed by a team including Vineet Jain, Vishal Gurnani, Juhi Parekh Mehta, and Harman Baweja, promising to deliver a thought-provoking story on critical social issues.
