Prakash Raj Slams Bollywood for Losing Authenticity and Depth

Prakash Raj, a prominent figure in Bollywood, recently expressed his concerns regarding the current state of Hindi cinema. During the Kerala Literature Festival, he conveyed his belief that mainstream films have shifted away from their roots, emphasizing a growing obsession with superficiality and financial gain.

Raj pointed out that while Malayalam and Tamil films are producing compelling narratives, Hindi cinema has lost its authenticity. He noted, “Everything looks beautiful, wonderful, like plastic, as you see in the Madame Tussauds museum.” He expressed hope for South Indian cinema, which continues to address significant social issues, including Dalit rights, through the works of emerging directors.

The actor and filmmaker continued to critique the transformation of the industry, stating that after the rise of multiplex theaters, Bollywood began focusing predominantly on producing films suited for these venues. This shift, he argued, has led to a disconnection from the broader audience, especially those in rural areas. He mentioned that the industry’s fixation on social media presence and glamorous lifestyles has overshadowed storytelling, resulting in a lost connection with its viewers.

Raj’s recent work includes a role in the Hindi film “Tere Ishk Mein,” where he played the father of actor Dhanush. Looking forward, he is set to appear in “Jana Nayagan,” a political action drama that marks the final film of actor Vijay. Although initially slated for release this month, the film’s premiere has been postponed due to censorship issues, with a new date yet to be announced.
