The digital revival of Ram Gopal Varma’s iconic film “Siva” has transformed the classic into a vivid experience for contemporary audiences. Restored in 4K, the film made its grand return to theaters this year, showcasing renewed audio and visual elements. The extensive process of restoration was discussed during a recent masterclass at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, where the challenges and triumphs of the project were unveiled.
The restoration effort, spearheaded by Annapurna Studios—the original producer of “Siva”—was a significant undertaking for both the team and the film’s star, Nagarjuna. Chief Technology Officer CV Rao shared insights into the “near-impossible” journey that took seven years to complete. During the masterclass, Nagarjuna expressed the excitement surrounding the remastered version, noting its potential to breathe new life into classic cinema.
The process began before 2019 when the team discovered that the film’s negatives were rapidly deteriorating. Compounded by the challenges of the pandemic and the subsequent shutdown of restoration labs, the urgency to digitize the film became critical. Rao recounted the moment when they attempted to inspect the picture negatives, revealing their extreme stickiness that hampered the unrolling process. To address this, the film underwent multiple rounds of ultrasonic cleaning, necessary to make it manageable for scanning.
Achieving a 4K scan was just the beginning. The team faced further challenges, including extensive scratches, dust, and torn frames that required meticulous frame-by-frame cleaning over a span of 10 months. In a surprising setback, two reels containing sound negatives were found to be completely damaged. Attempting to salvage audio from online sources was deemed insufficient for a theatrical release, prompting the team to seek out original prints from various exhibitors.
After contacting nearly 20 exhibitors, they finally located two surviving reels which contained the necessary audio elements to complete the restoration. This critical discovery allowed the team to recover the sound needed to accompany the stunning visual imagery.
“Siva,” released in 1989, is recognized as one of the greatest Indian films of all time. The film not only launched Nagarjuna’s career but also marked the debut of director Ram Gopal Varma. The newly restored version of “Siva” made its theatrical debut earlier this month, allowing long-time fans and new viewers alike to appreciate its legacy in a refreshed format.
