Rohan Shankar on the Revival of Hindi Cinema: Embracing Unity Over Rivalry

The film industry in India has seen a shift in dynamics, particularly with the rise of South Indian cinema, following the success of films like KGF, RRR, and Pushpa. This has sparked discussions about the perceived decline of Bollywood. However, recent releases such as Chhaava, Saiyaara, and Dhurandhar have challenged these notions, showcasing Bollywood’s potential to engage audiences.

Rohan Shankar, a prominent writer known for his work on Mohit Suri’s Saiyaara and collaborations with Priyadarshan on Bhooth Bangla and Haiwaan, has provided insights into the ongoing Bollywood versus South debate. He emphasizes that the current conversation extends beyond regional comparisons, focusing instead on storytelling that resonates with audiences. Shankar notes that successful films, whether from Bollywood or the South, share common traits of strong conviction and emotional depth. He points out the unexpected success of Saiyaara, highlighted by emotional reactions from young viewers in theaters.

Writers in the industry, according to Rohan, navigate their creativity based on the interests of producers and audiences. He acknowledges that successful films often influence trends, driving producers to create similar projects. Shankar remains optimistic about the future, believing that there will be an increase in diverse storytelling, as modern audiences are more receptive to varied narratives, provided they are engaging and sincere.

One of the upcoming projects featuring Rohan is Haiwaan, which is a remake of the 2016 Malayalam hit Oppam. He describes the challenges of adaptations, particularly the need to honor the original source while offering something fresh to new viewers. Shankar highlights the importance of keeping the emotional foundation intact, yet making necessary changes relevant to today’s audiences. The tone of the film, he notes, must feel contemporary without forfeiting the charm of the original.

The filming of Haiwaan, starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan, concluded in December 2025, with a release anticipated in August. In addition, Rohan Shankar is set to work again with Mohit Suri on a new project featuring Saiyaara stars Aneet Padda and Ahaan Panday. This collaboration signals Shankar’s ongoing commitment to contributing to the evolving landscape of the Indian film industry.
