Son of Ramanand Sagar, Anand Sagar, Passes Away at 84, Tributes Flow

Anand Ramanand Sagar Chopra, the son of renowned filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, passed away in Mumbai on Friday at the age of 84. The Sagar family released a statement describing Anand as “a man of warmth, dignity, and values,” reflecting the impactful legacy he left behind.

Anand’s family announced his death with profound grief, noting that he passed away peacefully on February 13, 2026. He was integral to Sagar Arts, the production house established by his father, famous for creating the iconic 1987 television series Ramayan. Anand was respected for his kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit, and he will be fondly remembered by family, friends, and acquaintances.

His last rites took place on the same day in Mumbai, specifically at the Hindu Smashan Bhumi (Pavan Hans) at 4:30 PM. Many from the entertainment industry, including Ramesh Sippy and Bhagyashree, attended to pay their respects.

As a member of the second generation of Sagar Arts, Anand played a significant role in various productions. He directed and produced several notable projects, including the 2008 remake of Ramayan, and contributed to television shows like Alif Laila, which aired in 1993. His diverse career also included involvement in the film Armaan, which featured the popular song “Ramba Ho Ho Ho,” recently revived for the movie Durandhar starring Ranveer Singh.

Anand co-produced the celebrated television serial Ramayan, which was foundational in Indian television history, starring prominent actors such as Arun Govil and Dipika Chikhlia. The narrative was derived from Valmiki’s ancient text and Tulsidas’ epic, Ramcharitmanas, contributing to its cultural significance.

Anand is survived by his wife, Nisha Sagar, and their children: Shakti, Gauri, and Amar Sagar, along with daughter-in-law Vaishali Sagar, granddaughter Aanya, and grandson Arjun. He faced the recent loss of his brother, Prem Sagar, a television producer and cinematographer, underscoring the profound grief within the family.

In the wake of Anand’s passing, tributes continue to pour in, highlighting his contributions to Indian cinema and television and the impact he had on those around him.
