Sunny Deol and Varun Dhawan’s Film Matches Shah Rukh Khan’s Blockbuster

Bollywood’s latest release, Border 2, hit theaters on January 23, 2026, just in time for the Republic Day festivities. This strategic timing mirrors the success of Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan, which set a new standard for box office results during this holiday period. The buzz surrounding both films highlights a growing trend in the industry, with audiences eagerly anticipating patriotic narratives linked to national pride.

While Pathaan debuted with overwhelming numbers, earning ₹55 crore net in Hindi on its opening day, Border 2 faced a more challenging start. Its first day was marred by cancelled morning shows, but it still managed to pull in ₹30 crore net. Remarkably, over the following weekend, Border 2 rapidly gained momentum, achieving ₹54.50 crore on January 25—merely 3% shy of Pathaan’s performance three years earlier.

Though Pathaan set a record with an extraordinary ₹70 crore on Republic Day 2023, Border 2 is poised to surpass the earnings of other competitive titles from subsequent years. Hrithik Roshan’s Fighter debuted with ₹41 crore the following Republic Day, while Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force brought in ₹32 crore last year. Given the strong word-of-mouth praise surrounding Border 2, it is poised to challenge Pathaan’s monumental milestone.

Border 2 boasts a talented cast that includes Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, Ahan Shetty, Mona Singh, Sonam Bajwa, and Anya Singh. Produced by an accomplished team including Bhushan Kumar, J.P. Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta, the film has amassed ₹121 crore net domestically and ₹167 crore worldwide just within its first three days of release.

As audiences continue to support these films driven by patriotism and excitement, it will be interesting to observe how the box office numbers for Border 2 are finalized. The coming days will reveal if it can eclipse the records set by Pathaan and redefine the benchmarks for future releases during this auspicious movie-going season.
