Vikhyat Gulati: Overcoming Struggles from Mumbai Streets to Kohrra 2

Vikhyat Gulati’s journey to becoming a recognized actor in the competitive Mumbai film industry is marked by challenges and perseverance. Originally from Delhi’s theatre scene, his rise to fame began with a pivotal role in the acclaimed series Kohrra Season 2.

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Gulati reflects on his humble beginnings and the evolution of his passion for acting. Despite not initially viewing acting as a dream, he always found himself drawn to the stage. He recalls his first role vividly, which ended in tears, yet that didn’t deter his love for performance. Continued involvement in theatre during his school years solidified his commitment.

Interestingly, his initial career path was set toward hotel management, where he secured a place in a prestigious college. However, the allure of theatre led him to enroll at Delhi University, and he quickly became immersed in the arts. This decision paved the way for opportunities in radio, writing, and eventually acting.

Gulati’s experience studying theatre in New York exposed him to a broader cinematic perspective, though it initially came with challenges. He recalls a moment when a teacher’s mocking comment about Indian cinema struck a nerve, prompting him to advocate for the value of his work and perspective. This experience reinforced his belief in the strength of Indian theatre and writing, despite industry differences.

A chance encounter in Mumbai changed the trajectory of Gulati’s career. He sought out casting director Anmol Ahuja not as an actor but to explore opportunities behind the scenes. This meeting led to a quick hire, and from 2018 to 2020, he gained valuable experience in casting before the pandemic halted progress. However, it proved instrumental in his later return to acting when he was contacted to audition for Kohrra.

As for his role in Kohrra, Gulati reveals that he never intended to audition for the character. While casting in Chandigarh-Panchkula, a moment of improvisation led to a successful audition tape, which ultimately resonated with the production team.

Despite his growing recognition, the transition to Mumbai was not easy, and it came with a harsh reality check. Initially feeling like a nobody in the new city, he returned to Delhi for a brief period but returned with renewed determination, taking theatre workshops and gradually reestablishing himself.

His first day in Mumbai was particularly memorable for its stark challenges. After his accommodation fell through with friends, he faced homelessness for a few days until he found temporary shelter through a distant connection. To sustain himself in the costly city, he took on multiple jobs, including writing for reality shows and working tirelessly without formal credit.

Recognition came when he landed a role in the youth series Flames. A standout scene where he supported his on-screen brother went viral, marking a turning point in how his parents viewed his career. The pride they felt when a stranger recognized him solidified his path in the industry, allowing him to connect with fans who related to his character.

Ultimately, Vikhyat Gulati’s story is one of resilience and growth. His journey from Delhi to Mumbai showcases not just the pursuit of a dream, but also the personal and professional challenges that shape a successful career in the entertainment industry. Kohrra Season 2, which features acclaimed actors like Mona Singh and Barun Sobti, is currently streaming on Netflix.
