Universal Pictures’ decision to split its musical adaptation of “Wicked” into two films has sparked varied reactions, with critics initially labeling the move as a mere financial strategy. However, the release of “Wicked: For Good” worldwide this week suggests that this approach has allowed for a more expansive narrative that goes beyond the original Broadway musical.
This second installment delves deeper into iconic moments from the story, including an updated portrayal of Dorothy’s arrival in Oz. Today’s audiences are treated to a richer context, thanks to the additional runtime which also introduces two original songs. One of these, titled “The Girl in the Bubble,” features Ariana Grande’s character Glinda grappling with her complex past.
Grande noted in a press conference that the film navigates the darker aspects of her character, allowing viewers to see beyond her seemingly flawless exterior. The narrative unfolds several years after the first movie, revealing Elphaba, played by Cynthia Erivo, as a rebel in exile, while Glinda enjoys her status as a symbol of the Wizard’s regime, leading to her internal struggles.
Despite achieving her dreams, Glinda feels an overwhelming sense of isolation, as highlighted by Grande. The film has generated buzz for potential awards, with both Grande and Erivo considered strong contenders in the upcoming Oscars race. Erivo’s new song, “There’s No Place Like Home,” adds to the film’s accolades.
The two-part format also enables filmmakers to explore the intersection of “Wicked” and “The Wizard of Oz” more thoroughly. As Dorothy, along with her dog Toto, makes her way to Oz—a journey that unfolds concurrently with the classic 1939 film—the audience sees her not just as a silhouette but in various scenes, illustrating her role in the larger narrative.
Producer Marc Platt emphasized that this structure provided ample opportunity to delve into the dual narratives, making for a compelling experience for viewers. Given the first film’s impressive box office success, grossing over $750 million worldwide, Universal is banking on the continued popularity of this beloved story.
As “Wicked: For Good” hits theaters, it becomes clear that the additional depth and fresh songs aim to captivate both long-time fans and newcomers alike, blending nostalgia with innovative storytelling.
