Woman Sets Record for Most Oscar Nominations Without a Win

The Oscars have concluded for this year, marking the end of the awards season. The film “One Battle After Another” took home the highest honors, including Best Picture and Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, who finally secured his first Oscar after multiple nominations in the past. However, the spotlight also shines on Diane Warren, a renowned songwriter whose streak of 17 nominations without a win continues to set records.

Diane Warren earned her first Oscar nomination in 1987 for “Nothing’s Gonna Stop Us Now” from the film “Mannequin.” This year, she was nominated for “Dear Me,” performed by Kesha and featured in the documentary “Diane Warren: Relentless.” Despite her acclaim, she did not win this time, losing to Ejae, Ido, and Teddy Park for their song “Golden” from the K-pop group Demon Hunters. This marks her ninth consecutive nomination in the Best Original Song category and the 17th overall.

Despite the ongoing disappointment, Warren remains optimistic. She expressed her sentiments on Facebook, stating, “Well at least I’m consistent! And I set a new record tonight!! But you know me, I will be back if you’ll have me!” Although she has yet to win a competitive Oscar, she received an honorary Academy Award at the Governors Awards in 2022.

Warren previously discussed the significance of awards, sharing, “It’s not validation. It would just be fun. Right now, I’m tied with my friend Greg Russell; we both have lost 16 times. But I’ve never taken awards as validation. The work is validation. When people love the songs, that’s validation.” She emphasized the importance of focusing on her craft, acknowledging that the outcome of awards is beyond her control.

Notably, several other prominent figures also share the experience of numerous nominations without wins. Glenn Close has received 8 Oscar nominations without a win, while Amy Adams has faced a similar fate with 6 nominations. Bradley Cooper counts 12 nominations across various categories without an Oscar win to his name.

Throughout her career, Diane Warren has made a significant impact on the music industry, having written nine number-one songs and 33 top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. Her contributions have helped artists like Cher, Celine Dion, and Aerosmith to achieve some of their most memorable hits.
